When a Dutch Design Week event was turning out into a bourgeois gathering of hard nippled fairies dreaming away into mushroom softness it was so great to see Greta Thunberg showing up to make clear that the world faces other challenges than who farts particles best or how much variations on a rabbit can be sold by Bryn Oh.
But Greta was clear: “My message is that I’ll be watching you. This is all wrong. I shouldn’t be up here. I should be making art. Yet you all come to me for hope. How dare you!
“You have stolen my time and creativity with your empty words. And yet I’m one of the lucky ones. People are suffering. People are dying. Entire ecosystems are collapsing. We are in the beginning of a mass extinction, and all you can talk about is mesh bodies, hair fairs and fairy tales of eternal Linden. How dare you!
“For more than 30 years, the science has been crystal clear. How dare you continue to look away and come here saying that you’re doing enough, when the politics and solutions needed are still nowhere in sight.
“You are failing me. But I start to understand your betrayal. The eyes of all future generations are upon you. And if you choose to fail me, I say: I will never forgive you.
“I will not let you get away with this. Right here, right now is where I draw the line. The world is waking up. And change is coming, whether you like it or not.
